Why aren’t we buying local? There are so many benefits to buying local, and yet we source our products from all over the world. I suppose it is easy enough to see why we buy some products from elsewhere: we can’t make them or grow them here. However, what about the things we can produce right here in North Dakota? A main reason for not buying locally is that it is cheaper to have it shipped to us, especially for big companies that are very popular in western North Dakota. Buying local is also not practical for us right here, right now. Our winters are harsh, and we can’t grow fresh produce during those several months. Hence, we ship things, and once you have a route somewhere, it is just as easy to send it year-round.
