Localism Week 5: Buying local helps the environment

Did you know buying local can help the environment? The way it does so is quite simple: buying local cuts out transportation. Less transportation means less fuel used. Food travels over 1,500 miles on average to get to your plate. That is a lot of gas! “Ten kcal of fossil fuel energy goes into our food system for every 1 kcal of energy we get as food.”-CUESA. This means we are putting ten 10x more energy into getting our food, than the energy we get out of our food.
